Shelby County Fairgrounds Grandstand Phase 1

The Need

The Shelby County fairgrounds have been a staple in Shelby County, IN for over 100 years providing recreation for the community. When a devastating fire destroyed the historic late 1800’s era grandstand, County representatives asked MNA to help restore a lost piece of history.

THE CHALLENGE

The restoration of a historic structure requires not only restoring it in the spirit of its original intent, but also to incorporate modern additions that will help to ensure that the structure’s useful life is extended far beyond its purpose. The challenge of recreating the grandstand would also provide opportunities for improvements that included increased seating capacity, outdoor sheltering structures, a proximate water source and using durable materials.

The Solution

MNA designed a new grandstand with extended water service for enhanced water protection, along with other infrastructure improvements in the vicinity of the grandstand that also sustained fire damage. A new storm shelter was also included to provide the public with protection from the elements during severe weather events. The final design offers seating for 250 people with both bleacher and individual seating options and will continue to serve the community far into the future.
