IUPUI Natatorium Replace Switchgear Lighting Switch

The Need

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis is a public university collaboration between Indiana University and Purdue University offering undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees from both universities. The natatorium needed replacement equipment for items that had reached the end of their service life. dA 15kV, medium voltage circuit breaker replaced the existing load interrupter switch (LIS) in a new location. A low voltage 480V switchgear lineup replaced existing switchgear in the same location and close-couple back to the existing substation transformer which was located on the floor below.

THE CHALLENGE

The replacement process regarding switchgear configurations can be challenging in terms of downtime. Careful planning and execution were essential. Therefore, the medium voltage breaker was installed and commissioned prior to the removal of the old switch. The removal process of the existing 15kV LIS would require rework and extension of the 15kV cable to the medium voltage breaker. The installation of the 4000A, 480V switchgear to replace the existing switchgear configuration had to fit within the same footprint as the existing equipment.

The Solution

MNA developed certified plans, sections, details, diagrams, schedules and technical specifications for the work. The planning process was successful and led to a project that was completed on time and within budget.
