Allison Transmission ADV Test Cells

The Need

For over 100 years, Allison Transmission has been the largest global manufacturer of medium-duty and heavy-duty, fully-automatic transmissions and a leader of electrified propulsion systems. The company needed to expand operations which included the renovation of a test cell to support dynamometers, a gear box, the test article and eddy current (EC) dynamometers.

THE CHALLENGE

The project was the first test cell at the facility to require design for flammable fuels. This design would require the addition of pressure relieving construction, and significant utilities in the form of cooling water and power to support the project. Further challenges included working in an existing footprint within an active test facility. Testing operations could not be interrupted during the construction of the project.

The Solution

MNA provided architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection services to complete the project. The facility upgrades included medium voltage power, bed plates, test cell infrastructure, and cooling water in the form of an additional 4000 gpm, roof- mounted cooling tower. Pressure relieving construction was included to support the use of future flammable fuels. An addition was required to house the medium gear associated with the drives and a new cooling tower water return pit and to support the EC dynamometers that required a gravity drain.
