Allison Engineering Services

The Need

Allison Transmission has been the largest global manufacturer of medium-duty and heavy-duty, fully-automatic transmissions and a leader of electrified propulsion systems. The company’s facility located in Speedway, IN required extensive renovations to meet testing goals and expand operations.

THE CHALLENGE

Due to the extensive scope of the project, much of the work needed to be phased to provide minimal disruption to daily operations. The project’s scope of work included:

  • Test Cell tower demolition and re-design for seven (7) different towers
  • New roofing for all test cells, associated control rooms and the connecting corridors
  • In-fill of 1500 SF courtyard to create finished space
  • Test Cell design to support vehicle electrification testing.
  • 15kV to 480V substation replacement
  • Convert open office spaces to rack storage
  • Test cell renovation to convert the cell to support a cross-drive stand and add ‘T’ to bedplate and upgrade AMEP systems inside the test cell
  • Replace two (2) medium voltage metal enclosed interrupter switchgear lineups, replace the line side feeders that serve the gear, and replace the load side feeders from the gear
  • Alternate fuel design, addition of natural gas, propane and hydrogen fuel to test cells
  • Tank farm-provide an arbor from the central location to the main building for pipe support in which the piping is routed across the roof to test cells

The Solution

MNA developed certified plans, sections, details, diagrams, schedules and technical specifications for each system. The project was completed within the required timeframe and facility operations experienced minimal disruption during construction.
